Is Design a Good Career? A Practical Guide for Parents

Your child wants to study design — is it a stable career? A clear guide for parents on design jobs, salaries, top colleges, costs, and how to support your child's choice.

When a child says "I want to study design," many parents feel a mix of pride and worry. Is it a real career? Will there be jobs? Is it as secure as engineering or medicine?

These are fair questions. Here's an honest, practical answer.

Design is a serious, growing profession

Design today is not just "drawing". Designers decide how apps work, how products look and feel, how brands communicate, and how spaces are used. Every major company — from technology firms and banks to car makers and fashion brands — employs designers.

India's growing digital economy, manufacturing sector and consumer brands have created strong demand for trained designers, especially in:

  • UX / UI and product design for apps and digital services
  • Communication and brand design
  • Industrial and product design
  • Fashion and textile design
  • Animation, gaming and visual effects

What do designers earn?

Salaries depend on the specialisation, college, skills and city. As a general picture:

  • Fresh graduates from good institutes typically start at salaries comparable to many engineering graduates; graduates of top institutes like NID and the IITs often receive strong placement offers.
  • With 5–8 years of experience, designers in fields like UX and product design can earn very well, especially in technology companies.
  • Freelancers and entrepreneurs can build their own studios and brands.

As with any field, those who keep learning and build strong portfolios grow fastest.

Top colleges are government institutes

Some of India's best design schools are government institutes — NID, the IITs (B.Des through UCEED) and NIFT. They're highly respected, relatively affordable, and offer financial support schemes. Strong private options also exist. See our College Showcase.

Is my child suited to design?

Signs your child may thrive in design:

  • They draw, doodle, build or make things for fun
  • They notice details others miss
  • They enjoy solving problems in creative ways
  • They're curious about how things work and why
  • They love art, fashion, games, apps, photography or crafts

Marks in maths or science don't decide success in design — but aptitude and practice do. A good way to find out is the free Design DNA Test, which takes about 8 minutes and gives a personalised report.

Can students from any stream apply?

Yes. Most B.Des programmes accept science, commerce and arts students. Read design courses after 12th for details.

How can parents help?

  1. Take the interest seriously. Design is a real profession with real entrance exams.
  2. Start early. Class 11 is the ideal time to begin preparation.
  3. Encourage everyday creativity — sketching, museum visits, making things.
  4. Know the exam calendar. Many design exams happen before board exams. See the 2027 calendar.
  5. Choose guidance carefully. Look for experienced faculty, small batches and honest counselling.

Common parent questions

Is design only for "artistic" children? No. Design is about thinking and problem solving. Drawing skills can be developed with practice.

Is coaching necessary? Not compulsory, but exams like NID and UCEED are very competitive, and expert feedback makes a real difference.

What if my child doesn't get into NID or IIT? There are many good design colleges. A well-planned list of 4–6 exams gives strong options.
