Animation vs Graphic Design: Which Career Should You Choose?
Love drawing and digital art? Compare animation and graphic design — daily work, skills, software, colleges and career paths — to choose the right design specialisation.
If you love drawing, digital art and visual storytelling, two careers probably attract you: animation and graphic (communication) design. They share skills, but the daily work is very different.
What animators do
Animators make images move — characters, objects, environments, interfaces. Work includes:
- Storyboarding and planning scenes
- Character design and expressions
- 2D frame-by-frame or 3D animation
- Motion graphics for ads, apps and explainer videos
- Visual effects for films and series
Industries: films, OTT series, advertising, gaming, ed-tech, app design.
What graphic designers do
Graphic or communication designers create visuals that communicate a message:
- Logos and brand identities
- Posters, packaging and publications
- Typography and layouts
- Social media and campaign visuals
- Signage and wayfinding
- Information graphics
Industries: branding agencies, advertising, publishing, startups, corporate design teams, freelancing.
