NIFT Entrance Exam 2027: GAT, CAT and Situation Test Explained
A complete guide to the NIFT B.Des entrance — how the GAT, CAT and Situation Test work, what to study for each, and how to prepare for fashion and design programmes at NIFT.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is India's leading institute for fashion and lifestyle design, with campuses across the country. NIFT's B.Des covers much more than clothing — specialisations include Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design and Fashion Communication.
Getting in means clearing three tests. Here's how each one works and how to prepare.
Always check the latest NIFT admission notification and prospectus at nift.ac.in for official dates and rules.
The NIFT B.Des selection process
| Stage | What it tests | Format |
|---|---|---|
| GAT – General Ability Test | Maths, English, reasoning, GK, case study | Objective, about 2 hours |
| CAT – Creative Ability Test | Drawing, creativity, design ability | Pen and paper, about 3 hours |
| Situation Test | 3D model-making and material handling | Hands-on, for shortlisted candidates |
Applications typically open around November–December, with the written exam in January–February.
GAT: General Ability Test
The GAT is objective. Typical sections:
- Quantitative ability — basic maths: percentages, ratios, profit and loss, time and work
- Communication and English — vocabulary, grammar, comprehension
- Analytical and logical ability — puzzles, patterns and reasoning
- General knowledge and current affairs — including fashion, culture and business
- Case study — reading a business or design situation and answering questions
How to prepare: 45 minutes a day of practice questions is enough for most students. Read a newspaper daily and keep notes on fashion and lifestyle news.
CAT: Creative Ability Test
The CAT is where NIFT gets to know you as a designer. Expect questions that ask you to:
- Illustrate a concept or emotion visually
- Design a product, poster or pattern for a given brief
- Use colour thoughtfully to create mood
- Draw people, often in movement or in a scene
- Think of original uses or stories from simple shapes
How to prepare:
- Draw the human figure every day. NIFT loves people, poses and fashion figures.
- Learn colour theory — harmonies, warm and cool, mood.
- Practise "theme" questions. Pick a word (e.g. "monsoon", "freedom", "festival") and create a composition in 30 minutes.
- Stay original. Avoid clichés like a globe with a plant growing out of it.
Situation Test
Shortlisted B.Des candidates take the Situation Test, where you build a 3D model from materials provided, based on a theme. You're judged on creativity, use of materials, construction quality and how well you explain your idea.
This is a skill you can't learn the night before. Practise building small models with paper, card, wire, clay and fabric. Our guide to model-making materials and studio test preparation will help.
A 4-month NIFT preparation plan
- Month 1: Basics — figure drawing, colour theory, daily GAT practice.
- Month 2: CAT-style theme questions every day. Start a newspaper habit for GK.
- Month 3: Full mock tests weekly. Begin weekend model-making practice.
- Month 4: Timed mocks, revision of weak GAT areas, more Situation Test practice.
